The populations of the Grand Sud-Est and Grand Sud of Madagascar are facing urgent needs caused by multiple climatic hazards.
Around 2.29 million people are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance in Madagascar in 2023 and until the first half of 2024, after devastating cyclones hit the Grand Sud-Est in 2022 and 2023, and severe drought affected the Grand Sud from 2020 to 2022.
The responses provided through funding received have improved and/or stabilised the food security situation in both the Grand Sud-Est and Grand Sud.
However, communities affected by consecutive tropical cyclones between 2022 and 2023 are still facing urgent humanitarian needs, almost a year and a half later. At the same time, in order to avoid a deterioration before the imminent El Niño, anticipatory actions will be scaled up as of now.
This Flash Appeal requires US$162.2 million, including $38.5 million for anticipatory actions so that humanitarian partners can reach around 1.6 million people in 2023/2024, in addition to the Government's response.
